Chimney Sweep & Repair in Mt. Lebanon, PA
Mt. Lebanon's brick and stone homes were built to last, and most of their chimneys have. After nearly a century, though, liners, mortar and crowns need a closer look. We sweep, inspect and repair them without leaving a mess.
A streetcar suburb with century-old chimneys
Much of Mt. Lebanon was built in the early 20th century, when streetcar lines made it practical to live in the South Hills and work downtown. The result is block after block of brick and stone houses, many in Tudor and Colonial Revival styles, on hilly, tree-lined streets.
Those houses usually have a solid masonry chimney with a wood-burning fireplace on the main floor, and often a second flue for the furnace or water heater. The brick and stone tend to hold up well. The parts that wear out are the ones you can't see from the street:
- Original clay-tile liners. Clay flue tiles from this era can crack from age, settling or a past chimney fire. Cracks and open joints let heat and gases reach the surrounding brick.
- Worn mortar on stone chimneys. Stone chimneys need careful repointing with a mortar suited to the stone. The wrong mix can trap water and speed up damage.
- Flashing on slate and tile roofs. Some older homes here still have slate. Flashing around the chimney has to be repaired carefully so the slates around it don't crack.
- Mature trees. Big trees drop leaves and twigs into uncapped flues, and give squirrels and raccoons an easy route to the roof.
Close lot lines can also mean a narrow side yard between your chimney and the next house. That's routine for us. Tell us about access when you book and we'll plan for it.
