Masonry & tuckpointing

Chimney masonry repair in Pittsburgh

Repointing, spalled brick replacement and chimney rebuilds for Pittsburgh's brick chimneys. We fix what's actually failing, match the mortar to your brick, and give you a written estimate with photos before any work starts.

Why brick fails

Pittsburgh winters work on your chimney every year

Brick and mortar are porous. Pittsburgh winters swing across the freezing point over and over, so water in the masonry freezes, expands and thaws many times in a single season.

The part above the roofline takes the worst of it, because it's exposed on all four sides. A chimney can look fine from the yard and still have open joints at the top. Our inspection checks the whole stack, with photos of what we find.

The freeze-thaw cycle

1. Water gets in
Rain soaks into the brick and through cracked joints.
2. It freezes
Ice expands and widens the cracks. Mortar turns sandy and falls out.
3. Brick spalls
The face of the brick pops off, letting in more water, so damage speeds up.
The fix
Grind out to sound mortar, refill with the right mix, and replace failed brick.
What we repair

The right fix for the damage you have

Most chimneys don't need a full rebuild. We'll show you what's failing and price the smallest repair that will actually last.

Repointing

Failed mortar is ground out to sound material and the joints are refilled and tooled. The most common chimney repair, and the one that prevents most of the others.

Spalled brick replacement

Individual bricks with blown faces are cut out and replaced with sound brick as close to your originals as we can source.

Partial rebuild

When the damage is concentrated above the roofline, we take the chimney down to solid masonry and rebuild from there with a new crown.

Full rebuild

For chimneys that lean, have widespread loose brick or structural cracks. Rare, and we'll show you clearly why it's needed.

Crown repair

The concrete slab on top sheds water away from the brick. Cracked crowns are sealed or rebuilt. Caps & crowns

Waterproofing

After repairs, a breathable water repellent slows down the next round of freeze-thaw damage. Leaks & waterproofing

Signs of masonry damage

What to look for from the ground

  • Mortar joints that are recessed, sandy or missing
  • Brick faces flaking, popping off or crumbling
  • White, chalky staining on the brick (efflorescence), a sign water is moving through it
  • Pieces of brick or mortar on the roof, in the gutters or on the ground
  • The chimney leaning, or cracks running through several courses of brick
  • Damp patches or stains on walls and ceilings beside the chimney
Leaning chimney or loose bricks?Keep people and cars away from below it, don't use the fireplace or the appliances that vent into it, and call us. A chimney that's moving needs to be looked at before it's used again.
What's included

How we do masonry work

  • Mortar matched to the brick. Older, softer brick needs a softer mortar. Mortar that's harder than the brick forces the damage into the brick itself.
  • Color matched as closely as we can. New mortar is usually a little brighter at first and weathers in over time.
  • Ground out to sound mortar. Not a skim coat smeared over the surface, which tends to fall off in a winter or two.
  • Roof, siding and landscaping protected. Tarps down and debris hauled away.
  • Before-and-after photos. Including the parts you can't see from the ground.
  • Free written estimate. Itemized, with options where there is a real choice to make.
A note on words

Tuckpointing or repointing?

Strictly speaking, repointing means replacing failed mortar, and tuckpointing is a decorative finish that adds a thin contrasting line to the joint. In Pittsburgh most people say tuckpointing for both, and that's fine. When you call about tuckpointing, we know you mean your joints are failing.

Either way, the work is the same: cut out the bad mortar, refill with the right mix, and tool the joint so it sheds water. Masonry needs to cure above freezing, so in the coldest weeks we schedule mortar work for milder days or take temporary steps to keep water out until then.

Do I need to rebuild my whole chimney?
Usually not. Most damage is concentrated in the joints, or in the section above the roofline, and can be fixed with repointing, brick replacement or a partial rebuild. A full rebuild is for chimneys that lean or have widespread structural failure. We'll show you photos and explain why we recommend what we do.
How much does chimney masonry repair cost?
It depends on what's failing: how many joints or bricks, how high the damage is, whether the crown is involved, and how easy the chimney is to reach. We'll inspect, photograph the problem areas and give you a free, itemized written estimate before any work starts.
Can you match the color of my old mortar?
We match it as closely as we can and choose a mortar type that suits your brick. New mortar is usually a little brighter at first and tends to weather toward the existing color over time, but an exact match on old, weathered mortar isn't always possible. We'll talk through it before we start.
Will waterproofing fix crumbling brick?
No. A water repellent slows down future damage, but it can't hold together brick or mortar that has already failed. Repairs come first. Once the masonry is sound, a breathable repellent is a good way to protect the work.
Can masonry repairs be done in winter?
Some can. Mortar needs to cure above freezing, so in the coldest weeks we schedule masonry work for milder days. If water is getting in now, we can often take temporary steps to protect the chimney until then.
What's the white staining on my chimney?
That's efflorescence: salts carried to the surface by water moving through the masonry. It isn't harmful in itself, but it tells you water is getting into the brick, usually from a cracked crown, open joints, a missing cap or failed flashing.
