Chimney Sweep & Repair in Monroeville, PA
Lots of Monroeville homes have swapped the wood fire for gas, or are thinking about it. We service gas logs, inserts and furnace flues, and we'll tell you honestly which conversion makes sense for your fireplace.
A post-war suburb that runs on gas
Monroeville grew fast in the decades after the Second World War, helped by the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Route 22 corridor. Much of its housing dates from the 1950s through the 1970s: brick ranches, split-levels and two-story homes, plus apartment, condo and townhome communities and newer houses built since.
Most of these homes heat with natural gas, and the chimney usually does double duty: a fireplace flue and a flue for the gas furnace and water heater. Over the years, many owners have stopped burning wood and put in gas logs or a gas insert instead.
That's a reasonable choice, but it isn't plug-and-play. A wood flue that's being converted needs to be clean and sound first. Vented gas logs need the damper fixed open. A gas insert needs its own vent liner. And the furnace flue still needs checking every year, because gas exhaust is full of water vapor that's hard on old clay tile.
Three ways to convert a wood fireplace
Each one suits a different goal. We'll inspect your fireplace and flue first, then help you choose.
Vented gas logs
Realistic flames in your existing fireplace. Mostly decorative: much of the heat goes up the chimney. The damper must stay open whenever they're in use.
Direct-vent gas insert
A sealed unit with a glass front that fits into the firebox, vented through liners run up the chimney. Much more efficient, and it closes off the open fireplace.
Wood insert instead
If you'd rather keep burning wood, a wood insert with a full stainless liner gives far more heat than an open fireplace.
