Chimney Sweep & Repair in Pittsburgh, PA

Rowhouses in Lawrenceville, big old houses in Shadyside, hillside homes on Mount Washington. City chimneys are old, often shared, and hard to reach. We sweep, inspect and repair them with a photo report on every visit.

Chimneys in Pittsburgh

Old brick, shared walls and a lot of hills

A large share of the city's houses were built before the Second World War, and plenty go back to the late 1800s. That means solid brick chimneys, but also clay-tile liners that have been cracking for decades and mortar that has been through a century of freeze-thaw winters.

Many fireplaces were built when Pittsburgh heated with coal, with small, shallow fireboxes and flues sized for a coal fire. Lots of them have since been closed off, converted to gas logs, or left to vent only the furnace and water heater.

What we plan for in city homes

  • Shared stacks. Rowhouses and twins often have two flues, yours and your neighbor's, under one crown.
  • Old or missing liners. Cracked clay tile, or flues that were never lined.
  • Coal-era fireplaces. Checked before anyone burns wood in them.
  • Hillside chimneys. Short on the uphill side, very tall on the downhill side.
  • Tight access. Narrow streets and steep roofs. Tell us when you book and we bring the right ladders.
Around the city

What we see, neighborhood by neighborhood

Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, South Side

Narrow brick rowhouses and attached homes, many from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Shared stacks, unlined or partly lined flues, and chimneys that have been patched more than once over the years.

Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Highland Park

Larger older houses, often with two or more fireplaces plus a furnace flue in the same chimney. Tall stacks, slate or tile roofs, and original clay liners that are well past their best.

Mount Washington, Brookline

Hillside lots and steep streets. Downhill chimneys can be very tall, and wind over the ridges can affect draft. Brookline has a lot of early- and mid-century brick homes with gas furnaces venting into the chimney.

Sharing a chimney with your neighbor? We inspect and clean the flue that serves your home and note the condition of the whole stack in your photo report. Work on the shared crown or the brick above the roof usually affects both houses, so it helps to talk to your neighbor before a repair. We're happy to walk both of you through the photos.

My rowhouse shares a chimney with my neighbor. Can you still work on mine?
Yes. Each house usually has its own flue inside the shared stack, and we sweep and inspect yours. If the crown, cap or brickwork above the roof needs repair, that work covers both flues, so we'll explain what we found and you can decide with your neighbor how to handle it.
Our old fireplace was built for coal. Can we burn wood in it?
Not without an inspection first. Many older city fireplaces were built for coal, with small fireboxes and flues that may be unlined or cracked. We'll check the firebox, damper and flue with a camera and tell you whether it's safe for wood, needs a liner, or is better suited to gas logs or an insert.
Can you inspect the chimney before we close on a house in the city?
Yes. NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 inspection when a property changes hands, and a general home inspection usually doesn't look inside the flue. We run a camera through every flue and send a written report you and your agent can use. See our real estate inspection page.
Do you work on steep hillside lots and tall chimneys?
Yes. Steep roofs, tall downhill-side chimneys and tight street access are a normal part of working in Pittsburgh. Let us know about access when you book, so we bring the right ladders and equipment.
How much does a chimney sweep cost in Pittsburgh?
It depends on the service, the number of flues, the type of fireplace or appliance, and how easy the chimney is to reach. You get the price upfront and in writing before any work begins, and if we find something that needs repair, the estimate is free.
